Off the Clock: Nancy’s New Hobbies

Off the Clock: Nancy’s New Hobbies

When people ask “What do you do?” I assume they mean what kind of 9-to-5 job do I do. So I tell them that I’m a writer, editor, trainer—whatever it is that I’m doing at that particular time. I have three grown daughters and a husband who is very into training for marathons and triathlons, so it only makes sense that I’m trying my hand at various hobbies these days. I have a lot of interests other than writing and so I’m going to share a bit about my new-found hobbies.

The seam ripper is my best frienemy when it comes to sewing

Recently I’ve started quilting. And by starting, I mean I have started on about 7 projects. Mind you, I haven’t finished any of them yet, but it’s just a matter of time. I went to The Dallas Quilt Show in March and was very inspired by the amazing artistry that I saw. Frankly, I don’t know how people quilted back in the old days, back before sewing machines, rotary cutters, and all the gadgets we have now existed. Then again, they didn’t have the Internet to distract them, so maybe it wasn’t such a big deal for them to sew long seams.

I’ve also started selling jewelry as a side gig, and that has been a lot of fun. I’ve never considered myself much of a sales person, but I’ve found that if you truly love a product and can speak about it with passion, you don’t have to try to sell. You simply share your love for the product and people can’t help but notice.

And finally, my other interest is working out. I’ve been part of an outdoors boot camp for a year now and we do high intensity interval training (HIIT) three days a week. When I started a year ago, I had hoped that I would be kind of amazing by now, but I’ve found that you have to be extremely consistent and push yourself to get stronger. Check back with me in another year and I’ll let you know how it’s going!
